Hebrew School

For Children

Our focus on Hebrew is not just to prepare our students for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah, but to prepare them for a life of Jewish learning in Hebrew texts. We focus on reading, writing, comprehension and comfort with basic Hebrew texts and prayers. It is vital that your child attend Hebrew school regularly in order for them to get a firm grasp on acquiring the skills to be competent in the Hebrew language. For more information, click here.

Two-day option
Currently, Temple Beth El offers two options for 3-7 grade Hebrew School. We encourage as many families as possible to bring their children to Wednesday Hebrew school, which starts at 4p.m. We recognize, however, that many families drive a great distance from around Washington to attend Temple Beth El and it is not always possible to attend Wednesday Religious School by 4p.m. Thus, we offer a Sunday program at 9a.m. for those who are able to drop off their students before Sunday School and who live greater than 15-20 miles away from the temple. Whether your child attends the Wednesday or Sunday program, it is important that they attend that particular program throughout the entire year and do not combine or mix-and-match the two programs, as they move at a different pace. Please contact the religious school office if you have any questions or concerns regarding the two-day option for Hebrew school.

For Adults

Adult Hebrew classes at a variety of levels are offered during the school year on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings. Beginning classes introduce students to the alphabet and simple words and phrases. Intermediate and advanced classes develop skills in reading and understanding Jewish liturgy and biblical Hebrew. Classes in modern Hebrew are also offered on occasion. For more information, click here.
