Letter to the Editor of The News Tribune
September 27, 2001
To the Editor:
“It is a good time to be alive.” That is what many of us
said Tuesday evening as we watched over 500 candle-bearing
people stream out of Temple Beth El and surround the building
with their light and love. The vigil was run by Rev. David Alger
and our friends at Associated Ministries. It was magnificent!
The attempted arson last Saturday night (Sept. 22) at Temple
Beth El, generated emotions among our members ranging from fear
to sadness to anger at whoever did this. But the community
response was overwhelming, and it continues to bring us great
comfort.
In addition to everyone who participated in the vigil, we are
grateful to our many friends throughout the Tacoma community who
have been so supportive. The list includes, but is by no means
limited to, Mayor Mike Crowley and the Tacoma City Council, the
Tacoma Fire and Police Departments, our heroic neighbor who
reported the fire and saved our building, the staff of the
Tacoma News Tribune, and the hundreds of wonderful people who
have offered their love and support.
An individual or small group tried to destroy our Temple,
but, clearly, the vast majority of Tacoma stands with us, united
against this crime. We are inspired by your support and we thank
you very, very much.
Sincerely
