The
doors in the social hall contain the words of Jacob when he awoke from his
dream and he saw the ladder connecting heaven and earth: 'How awesome is the
place, this is none other than the house of God, the gate of heaven"
(Genesis 28:17). Jacob names the place of his dream, Beth EL (house of God).
On the outside of the doors facing 12th Street is the menorah, a seven branch
candelabra
which stood in the ancient Temple and whose form has long served as a
symbol of Judaism.
On the inside of the door is the watchword of Judaism:
Hear O Israel, the Eternal is our God, the Eternal is one. The same words are
repeated on the outside of the Vassault Street door.
On the inside
of the Vassault door are the tablets
of the Law.
